It took more than 1900 pictures and takes to capture the new form of the renovated AKS Hinitsa Bay. Both the photoshooting and the videoshooting of our hotel were completed with absolute success and the amazing result will soon be available to you! Christos Drazos (drazos.com) and Orpheas Calaphatis (cinedrone.gr), the most talented professionals that is, our friends and numerous staff members were recruited lovingly and willingly for 3 days to present to all of you the wonderful results of a great renovation. There is no experience more beautiful than enjoying a wonderful drive, through forests and mountains, through picturesque villages and, of course, next to the sea. The 2016 Spring Rally of FILPA (Greek for Friends of Old Automobiles) was organized this year at the most beautiful part of Peloponnese and the Saronikos islands. On 9 and 10 April, classic cars, which make you fall in love with driving, started off at Isthmia, passed through the amazing roads of Corinth and Argolida and ended up at Costa coast, next to Porto Heli, in order to cross the sea towards the always aristocratic Spetses. Such events don’t take place for their competitive sections of course, though competition this year was quite significant, with stages that made the drivers bring their classic cars to their limits. But the most important reason to hold such an event is to come into contact with modern history, to share our love for beauty, whether it can be found in nature or man’s technological achievements. The rally categories were two this year: the first one was Regularity and it included the rally proper, with five stages with a total length of 110 kilometers. The second was Touring where the drivers could drive in a more relaxed way, since the competition included only one stage of 25 kilometers, when they toured around Spetses. The mountains of Corinth, Argolida (in all its aspects) and Spetses. An ideal route, even more so when it is done in cars with exciting designs and an air of quality that follows them around. The spring rally has started becoming a tradition and, surely, there is no place more fitting than the winding roads of northeastern Peloponnese and of Spetses. Porto Heli has been called the Riviera of Greece for decades and there is a good reason for that. Many, for that matter. The characterization is no accident after all. It is completely relevant to the cosmopolitan character of the area, its beautiful beaches, the good crowds, the unparalleled nature that surrounds the picturesque villages and towns. The AKS Porto Heli and AKS Hinitsa Bay Hotels are in the center of all these, since they offer the most luxurious of vacations and the best of services. But why is Porto Heli characterized as such? What makes it the Riviera of Greece? 1. It has amazing beaches The central beach of Porto Heli is wonderful on its own, but to get to the best, it requires a bit of looking around. Hinitsa, for example, is only a few minutes away and it is perhaps the best beach in Argolida, excellently organized, with a perfect view. 2. The rich and famous select it for their vacations On the hillsides around Porto Heli, there are many villas of famous Greeks and not only Greeks. Many people from abroad choose a vacation home in Porto Heli. Aghios Aimilianos, a few kilometers away, is a prime example. 3. Mountains and sea, there is an idyllic combination that enchants everyone. 4. Leave your boat at Porto Heli Offshore from the central beach of Porto Heli, you’ll see a lot of moored boats. They are an integral part of the cosmopolitan identity of the area and another reason why Porto Heli is called the Riviera of Greece. 5. The best neighbors Ermioni, Koilada, Aghios Aimilianos (mentioned before), Hydra, Spetses; all of them are areas that the travelers to Porto Heli must visit. It is very rare that such a small island, like Spinalonga, carries so much history on it, so much pain, such a heavy name. This island, situated in the east of Crete, outside Elounda, known mainly as a leper colony, was at some point joined to the main island of Crete and the Kolokytha peninsula, but took its form in 1526 when the Venetians dug a canal to separate it from the land. It was used as a fort for many centuries until, in 1903, it started to be used to exile the lepers and keep them away from the general population. Of course, that’s just one version of its story, since the other one says that the island was once named Kalydon and that it had always been a fort, since it was at the entrance of the bay harbor, so it had to protect the residents from invaders. The years it spent as a fort, however, aren’t what has made the island a popular destination these past few decades and, especially, the past few years. The visitors arrive on the island to know first hand the immeasurable pain of those people who were sent there to stay away from the healthy ones. Spinalonga was always counted among the most interesting parts of Crete, but since Victoria Hislop wrote The Island, that dramatizes its history, and also since the television series of the same name, travelers have sought more and more to visit the island in order to see where these imaginary, yet so close to the truth, stories took place. In order to get to Spinalonga you’ll have to have your own boat or catch the ferry from Elounda, Plaka, or even Aghios Nikolaos, though the latter is a bit farther away and the tickets slightly more expensive. The ferry will take you to the island within a few minutes and, sometimes, it will also go around the Kolokytha peninsula. There are many versions about the origins of the name Spinalonga. Others say that it comes from the Greek phrase “Στην Ολούντα” that the Venetians couldn’t pronounce properly and others that it comes from the Latin phrase for long thorn. Nothing has been confirmed and even the name Kalydon is questionable. Spinalonga belongs among the monuments or sights that have a difficult history, that you cannot enjoy or admire, where a visit is like a recognition of the vicious aspects of mankind. Argolida is a large region, with people that always keep smiling and don’t miss a chance for celebration. It’s no surprise then that many cities and towns in Argolida are organizing events for this year’s carnival. Nafplion, Argos, even our neighbor, Koilada, are partying this year as well, and Porto Heli couldn’t but be a pioneer in this effort.

Of course Porto Heli is once more innovating, since the carnival there will take place later than the rest, on March 12 and will include a night parade for floats and masqueraded people, while a concert is being prepared in its beautiful harbor. The restaurants of the area also want to be included in the festivities, since they’ll organize theme parties.

Sunday afternoon will be full of surprises as well, as there will be a foot masquerade, along with other events that will include a juggler, a magician and a see bonfire.

Porto Heli knows how to celebrate and it proves as much once more during the Carnival of 2016.

The entire wall that was behind the balcony will be replaced by glass panels, while the balcony itself will no longer have banisters but transparent glass. This way nothing will obstruct the amazing view to the Argolic gulf and you will be able to enjoy the sea and the view from any spot in your room. The decoration of the rooms has also been changed, so it can match the new era of AKS Hinitsa Bay. The changes in the pool are a bit more discreet; emphasis will be put upon functionality and safety without of course compromising the aesthetics and the beauty of the space. The time you’ll spend in the pool, or by its side, with a drink, will always be offering the same peace and quiet and enjoyment. What hasn’t changed?
